Established in 1870, Apte Wachan Mandir is one of the oldest and most respected public libraries in Maharashtra. For more than a century, it has been a nurturing space for readers, thinkers, researchers, and students.

Our History

Established in 1870, Apte Wachan Mandir, Ichalkaranji, is one of Maharashtra’s oldest public libraries, founded with royal patronage.

In 1910, the library was renamed in honour of social reformer Adv. Rambhau Apte, recognizing his invaluable contribution.

For over 150 years, Apte Wachan Mandir has stood as a symbol of literary heritage, learning, and cultural enrichment for the community.

Sections & Divisions

Newspaper Section

A free reading room on the ground floor for the convenience of senior citizens. Newspapers are neatly arranged on stands.

Timings: 7:30 AM – 12:00 PM & 4:30 PM – 8:15 PM (Except Holidays)
Issue Section

Fully computerised book issuing and returning area. Nearly 400–500 members use this service every day. Photographs of renowned Marathi litterateurs create a beautiful literary atmosphere.

Reference Section

A collection of rare books, ancient manuscripts, historical records, maps, and valuable documents—a treasure for researchers and knowledge seekers. Photocopy services available on request.

Children's Section

Thoughtfully designed to encourage reading habits in children. Colourful furniture, child-friendly decor, and a large collection of children’s books with very low membership fees.

English & Hindi Sections

Dedicated sections for English and Hindi literature. Readers can freely access books for in-library reading without issuing them.

Art Gallery

A curated exhibition of exceptional oil and watercolour paintings by renowned artists from the era of the erstwhile princely state.

The "Jahagir" Section

A remarkable archive of pre-independence documents, reports, and papers. Includes books written by Shrimant Narayanrao Babasaheb, Ichalkaranji Granthmala, and rare works on local history, literature, and arts.

Future Projections: The library is actively adopting modern techniques such as scanning and digitisation of rare books, bar-coding, e-books, compact furniture, mobile library services, and support to nearby rural libraries. A fully enriched children’s section and advanced staff training programs are also in progress.
